Vitamin D deficiency is affect physical and mental development of children. A study in England found a quarter of toddlers lack of Vitamin D. Unfortunately, most parents do not know how to meet the needs of the baby in vitamin D.
In areas where a lot of sunlight, most kids would not be deficient in vitamin D. But it’s good to give children the intake of vitamin D to its needs.
Dr. Benjamin Jacobs, a pediatrician at the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital, said vitamin D deficiency in the golden age is a big problem. To the BBC Breakfast, he said, “Children who are deficient in vitamin D at risk of delays in walking, and even bone pain and fragile bones susceptible to rickets,” he said as quoted from the Daily Mail.
He stated, although very influential on the development of children, many doctors, midwives and nurses are not aware of it. In addition to infants, pregnant women, nursing mothers and elderly recommended to consume supplements of vitamin D to avoid growth disorders.
Dr. Jacobs said, other than through food, supplements can also meet the requirement of vitamin D. According to him, excess vitamin D will not be harmful. Although the need for vitamin D is recommended as much as 400 mg, Dr. Jacobs stated intake of 4000 mg would not be harmful.
“They are not much exposed to sunlight, have a lot to eat oily fish and supplements to get enough vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to bone loss, impaired muscle function and increased risk of fractures.”
