Hallucinations of smell before Migraine

Approximately 30 percent of migraine patients have experience sensory disturbances shortly before the attack. In certain cases, even beginning with the emergence of tingling sensation or numbness, and difficulty speaking or understanding language.

In his study, Matthew Robbins from the Montefiore Headache Center in New York, said that the emergence of olfactory disturbance shortly before a migraine is a new finding. “What we call as the hallucinations of smell, it has not been included in the medical literature before,” he said, as quoted from Fox News.

The researchers conducted a study to review the 25 cases of migraine in general. They also examined records of more than 2,100 over 30 months. “Hallucinations the most common aroma is the smell of things burning or smoke.”

“Some people describe the smell of burning in general. Some smell of cigar smoke, wood smoke or burnt popcorn. The smell of garbage or waste is the next most common smell reported. But it also illustrates some unpleasant odors, such as oranges, and coffee.”

It is unclear why the hallucinations that often arises is the most pleasant aroma. Or why these olfactory hallucinations only affects a small portion of 11 percent of the population who suffer from migraine.

“But the symptoms were thought to involve a stress hormone, in which the electronic wave activity in the brain nerve cells increases, followed by a stress wave activity,” said Robbins.

“And, because the olfactory centers in the brain occupies less space than the center of vision, this may explain why the symptoms appeared more dazed eyes and olfactory hallucinations are rarely realized.”
